Prescott Territorial History

Founded in 1864, Prescott was the territorial capital of Arizona not once, but twice! In those days, the Lincoln administration wanted a capital in the north as the civil war was raging. Later, the territorial capital was moved to Tucson, then back to Prescott. Finally in 1889, the Arizona capital was permanently established in Phoenix. The former Governor's Mansion is open to the public at the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott.
