Chino Valley History

Recently incorporated in 1970, the Town of Chino Valley, Arizona has an interesting history. Originally settled by soldiers looking for Thumb Butte in 1864, the area was mistakenly thought to be Prescott, because a similar landmark, Little Thumb Butte was identified. After learning of their error the army moved on, but not before Chino Valley was recognized in history. Soon, Chino Valley became the farming and ranching area for Northern Yavapai County.

Chino Valley Area Attractions

Business establishments line the north-south corridor of Highway 89, many of which are related to real estate. Chino Valley has grown plenty but retains its pleasant country culture. Without a true downtown in the traditional sense, the Chino Valley Safeway at E Road 2 North has become the de facto landmark for all visitors in the area. Of course, the in-store Starbucks Coffee also plays a part in establishing the grocery store as the local hangout.

Attractions in Chino Valley include the Red, White and BOOM! Fourth of July Old Home Manor Fireworks display, swimming at the Chino Valley Aquatic Center, and the Susan A. Williams Equestrian Center at Old Home Manor. Look for the Labor Day Rodeo at the Equestrian Center during Territorial Days, the annual event celebrating Chino Valley's anniversary as the first territorial capital of Arizona. Come and celebrate at the Town Hall Complex where there will be a Lion's Club pancake breakfast, a community parade, games, entertainment and the annual Labor Day FFA Corn Dinner.
